The Nine Lives of Chloe King and the Tedious Love Triangle

Things pick up right where they left off. With kissing. ONLY CATHAT IS THERE HE SAW EVERYTHING. Now he’s mad. Which he has every right to be. Chloe chases him and tries to apologize. He doesn’t accept it. Makes sense. She won’t make out with him but she will make out with a dude who mean’s nothing? Harsh.

Also Alek saw how she threw him under the proverbial bus so he leaves as well. Chloe you’ve made a mess of things lady.

After the credits Chloe is still sad and sitting on a roof crying. This is how I know I’m an adult and she’s a kid. I don’t feel the least bit sorry for her as she kind of brought this on herself?

She gets up to run home and sees a building which she photographs and then hears a woman screaming and goes to save her from a mugger. Only the woman beats her with a 2×4 and cops appear and now she’s under arrest and her mom is piiiiiissed.

This is a very distant version of her mom's face. It is basically the face she has for more than half the episode.

Chloe tries to explain it and it doesn’t really work BECAUSE SHE GOT ARRESTED AT 1 AM. Somehow it turns into she and her mom talking about boys and then about her dad. Wait what? Chloe tries to explain it all. Her mom makes this appropriate face.

And then coffeehouse music plays and they hug.

The next day Paul says what we’re all thinking. “Arrested at 1 am? Dead for life. Killed by parents. You are luck Cat Girl.” Paul shrugs when it comes to the romance thing and they head off to school where Chloe tries to talk to Alek and he’s sassy and dismissive. It all ends with Chloe basically giving up on all boys forever. SHE CHOOSES HERSELF.

After school on the way to the police station Chloe tries to advertise a Kia. Chloe I will not buy it but this in episode ad was way better than Bones‘s so whatever. Also the muggers see her and her mom and she tells her mom to declare her dad dead. Busy walk to the police station!

Woah. Wait. What is in Chloe’s hair? Has she gone on a trip to the Bahamas circa 1995?

"Guys guess where I went for spring break?!"

At the station the cop tries to compliment Chloe and her mom calls her an idiot. Then the cop suggests Chloe is on drugs and her mom politely tells him he’s an idiot. Now her mom suspects Chloe is on drugs and hates the cop even more. Did you see that look she gave him when they left? Youch!

Outside the muggers bum rush Chloe and her mom and Chloe does her Cat Girl thing and saves her. But after the commercial break it’s dropped so Chloe can research that building she photographed.

Oh never mind. Not dropped. Pretty sure her mom feels she’s not as much a Cat Girl as on PCP. She can’t seriously think her daughter is on drugs because she brings it up super casually and not so seriously.

The next day Chloe, who has no boyfriends and has a mother suspecting she’s on drugs decides to stalk college-aged CatHat. Oooooh that building thing was her researching CatHat’s mom’s death. CatHat’s new girlfriend shows up while they’re talking and Chloe walks away.

Not again!

AMY STOP WITH THESE HATS. I forgive you because you speak truths and tell Chloe to give up on CatHat and get with Alek. Wise Amy.

Jasmine approaches her to talk about Alek. Like Amy she is wise.

Amy and Chloe head back to the police station so Chloe can pick out the muggers and she sparkle touches the cop’s mind and finds he doesn’t like her. So she and Amy go on stalker duty.

And they see he’s working with the muggers who tried to kill her and her mother. Then her mom calls to chat about dinner while Amy worries that they’ll miss important criminal stuff…like the muggers planning to murder Chloe.

Elsewhere CatHat takes Chloe’s suggestion and follows the clues. It leads him to a storage facility full of clothes and assorted junk. I was hoping for something cooler.

At Chloe’s home her mom does that mom thing where she snoops because she fears her daughter is on drugs and at the coffee shop Amy, Chloe, Jasmine and Paul are getting ready to track down the muggers. Alek shows up and makes everything awkward.

But more awkward? Chloe getting home and finding her mom with her computer and the knowledge that dead dad is not so dead. Chloe tries to explain what happened and is all rational but her mom is just tremendously hurt. Really, really, really hurt. I want to give her mom a hug because I’m with her on this. Chloe really shouldn’t have hidden the whole “alive dad” thing from her. No matter her good intentions.

CATHAT STOP BEING BORING LOOKING THROUGH STUFF AND CRYING.

Chloe may be grounded but that doesn’t exclude the roof, where Alek finds her. They chat and Chloe reveals that she’s ready to tell her mom that she’s a cat person. Alek uses it as an opportunity to tell her it’s a bad idea. NO ALEK IT ISN’T HER MOM IS AWESOME AND WILL LOVE HER AND HER CRAZY NAILS.

Elsewhere Amy and Paul and Jasmine and Alek are hunting muggers.

But the muggers are in Chloe’s hooooouse. Her mom has been chloroformed! Chloe misses it because she’s moping and listening to music. Aaaaah. But she’s sees them moments before they see her goes into fierce and protective cub mode. There is fighting and acrobatics.

Surprise!

Then Chloe grabs her mom and hides BUT LEAVES HER PHONE ON. Before the bad guy can find her and she’ll be forced to reveal her powers to her mom by beating the guy down Alek appears and saves the day and keeps Chloe’s secret.

Now things are no longer awkward between them and her mom is over being hurt (that’s the shock talking). When did their relationship become the emotional core of the show? It works so well. Her mom’s face when Chloe tells her her dad has reasons for disappearing because he loves them? Wonderful.

After the talk she takes the opportunity to rifle through things and finally email the husband that abandoned her.

I would have been okay with it ending there but no, CatHat has to show up and pull Chloe into his mom’s murder while Alek watches and looks hurt.

Notes

• Amy was killing it in this episode. Nailed every line.
• The whole Chloe/Alek/Cathat triangle felt really tired. I fail to understand why Cathat keeps pursuing her.
• The Chloe/Mom dynamic? Amazing. It borders on Lorelai and Rory chemistry but with a heaping dose of really excellent drama in the background.
• Which begs the question, why hasn’t she told her mom? And when will her mom learn the truth?
• the CatHat dead mom storyline better play out soon. They’re working it well past its due date.
• And can Jasmine be given something to do besides be Alec’s cheerleader?
