Whitney Survives and Playboy Club Dies

I’m not going to say it’s a great crime against taste that Whitney has been picked up and The Playboy Club has been cancelled. The Playboy Club wasn’t very good. It was campy fun sometimes but campy fun doesn’t get butts on the couches week after week and rampant sexism disguised as feminist commentary sure as hell gets the butts out of the seats.

More importantly its entire goal for success was to latch onto the Mad Men train. And yeah Mad Men is a major critical success and in LA and New York it’s a pretty big deal, but the most watched episode of Mad Men had a million fewer viewers than the least watched episode of The Playboy Club.

Maybe, just maybe, aping popular basic cable shows isn’t the recipe for success for a broadcast network?

I’ll miss you The Playboy Club. When you weren’t the TERRIBLE Eddie Cibrian show you were kind of fun and I could totally see myself watching you while liquored up. Too bad you were also the Eddie Cibrian show. F that guy. Hard core.
