And Now Megan Fox Is A Prostitute

In the trailer for Sascha Baron Cohen’s new film, The Dictator (not to be confused with the Charlie Chaplin classic The Great Dictator), his tyrant from an obscure country in the Middle East exemplifies everything wrong with assholes having absolute control. It’s funny, dark, and satirical.

In one particular scene he’s shown rising from a bed while a naked Megan Fox watches. Then he promptly thanks her and pays her in jewels. It’s funny. An old joke about how actresses prostitute themselves using a woman famous for her sex appeal.

What made the joke a little more than something  as old as theater was the use of Megan Fox. She’s a “big” actress. Not quite A-list but universally known. Here is a woman considered vapid and pretty and she’s appearing in a sharp satire showing she has a sense of humor and that she “gets” it. It’s a type of self depreciating humor I can really get behind.

But allow me a moment of pearl clutching. Isn’t it a little sad that Fox has to pretend to be a prostitute to be likeable? What does that say about our culture? Tom Cruise committed PR suicide and came back pretending to be a powerful studio exec. Lohan descended into the clichéd world of children stars and is trying to come back in Playboy. And now Fox is coming back playing with her image and alluding to prostitution.

So what…guys get to play out power fantasies to get back in our good graces but women have to drop their drawers? That’s cool.

And the worst part? I am still totally delighted with Fox pretending to be a prostitute. It’s like her playing with her image as a man-eater in Jennifer’s Body only it made me chortle instead of giving me nightmares.
