  • Women Geeks Rule! Infographic Reveals Population Of Internet’s Biggest Fandoms

Man, I love when I get online during a major geek gathering like San Diego Comic Con. Male geeks, historically the most vocal kind of geeks, freak out because there are so many women around talking about Twilight. At other times of year you find them lurking on forums in the far corners of the internet mocking Harry Potter fans or laughing about all those stupid kids who play Pokemon. Nevermind the fact that any guy between the ages of 14 and 26 can do a pitch perfect Pikachu impression.

Male geeks are the “real geeks” right? The rare female geek who share the same interest is a girl geek first and a geek second.

But according to this infographic male geeks and the fandoms they are most commonly associated with are in the minority. Between them Harry Potter and Twilight fandoms have more than 51 million fans on Facebook. That’s six times as many fans as Doctor Who, Pokemon, Star Wars and Star Trek combined.

By sheer numbers female dominated fandoms rule the earth.

When you get into the minutiae of things you see that those male dominated fandoms are busy crafting epically dense wikis and feeding corporations with the purchase of loads of crap like Han Solo ice cube trays and Dalek shaped condoms. Female fandoms are busy making new stories. Carrying on the tales of Harry, Hermione and the Cullen family in more than a million pieces of fanfiction and artwork. Some of that fanfiction has even been discussed in the mainstream media.

The less said about the content of those 1.7 million pieces of Pokemon art the better (hint it is full of furry porn).

So why is it that geek is still synonymous with dudes sleeping on Enterprise sheets? It doesn’t adequately describe the majority of geeks: whom are female, into magic and romance and larger than many countries.*

EDIT: As pointed out in the comments, like Harry Potter and Twilight, Doctor Who is now a fandom largely dominated by women. Particularly women into the totally awesome and dreamy “new” series. FURTHER PROOF PEOPLE.

*The fandoms now the women and girls. Jerk.

Doctor Who is pretty female-friendly too. Most DW fans I know are women.

My problem is I always thing Old Doctor Who when I see Doctor Who discussed as a fandom. That was a scary and male dominated place. But you’re right. DW is now predominately female. FURTHER PROOF OF OUR DOMINATION.

I love me some Doctor Who, although I admit that I kind of want to see the Doctor turn into a woman on one of his resurrections. I’d love a show about a fun and clever female hero who always seems to know the right thing to do. Not that the companions aren’t great; the show is obviously very forward-thinking and feminist friendly. But I long for more shows where it’s a woman who’s always saving the day.

    Also, I miss David Tennant.
