Part of Me Video a Nice Departure for Katy Perry

Katy Perry’s videos get hundreds of millions of views on YouTube. Maybe it’s because they always deliver with solid production values and easy-to-follow storylines.
Or maybe it’s because of teenage boys.
But the brand-new Part of Me video, which came as a follow-up to the lyrics-only vid of the same song, is a welcome departure from the usual stuff that the candy-coated pop princess puts out there. She’s also gearing up for a re-release of her smash hit Teenage Dream on March 26.
What masquerades as another “I hate my cheating boyfriend” video becomes a cocky display of girl power and… really you guys… it made my little feminist self happy inside.
In the wake of videos like Rihanna’s You Da One and Nicki Minaj’s Stupid Ho, it was nice to see such an anti-sexual and unexpected take on an otherwise simple song that I could take or leave.
The only thing I feel at all objectionable is the covering of the boobies and the cutting of the hair. I know, I know. She’s a marine now. She needs to shed those girly things. But why? I get the practical, physical reasons. But it’s always so emotional and G. I. Jane-like. Cover your boobies, become less feminine, and thereby stronger.
Why can’t a lady with long hair be strong?
Oh wait. Nevermind. They can. IN FANTASY WORLDS.
Why this continuing need for fems to look like men in order to be considered more deadly? Xena is deadly no matter what she is wearing.
Maybe it’s less about gender and more about becoming uniform. (Disclaimer: I have never been in the military and have almost no experience in that arena.) If all soldiers look the same, then they’re more intimidating as a whole. Or maybe it’s even more simple than that: protection of female soldiers by making them look more like men, thus keeping them safer from sexual assaults. I just thought of Eowyn from LotR.
But still, why can’t this military attire be more friendly to a woman’s natural assets? The hair-cutting is doable: all people have hair, and if you’re in the military, it’s probably better short. But let the bitches keep their boobs unwrapped.
Katy speaks to the amount of training she underwent making this video, in a short and rather simple interview.
I think Perry has more brains than ya think, if you’re a h8ter. Her videos and songs range from the most terrible, trite stuff, to big, inspiring hits like Firework. Now she’s playing to the military and has made what ultimately amounts to a ballad about America.
She either has lots of brains or really good agents. I think it’s both.
