J Lo Bringing Lesbian Moms To ABC Family

Remember when ABC Family was that channel you skipped over in your hunt for good television?
The last five years have seen a grand shift towards the TGIFification of the channel. Where once there was only horror now there’s fun stuff like Pretty Little Liars, Bunheads and The Nine Lives of Chloe King (RIP) and sitcoms that you thought died with the ABC Friday night line up in 1997.
The move towards family friendly smart television that manages the fine line between classy and trashy CW can never seem to find has worked really well for the channel and attracted some smart talent.
Now it’s attracted your favorite Selina impersonator and mine, Jennifer Lopez. She’s producing an hour long drama for ABC family about a lady cop and her school teacher wife and their three very attractive teenage children who see their lives forever changed when another teenager falls into their laps. Hopefully this teenager is a clone, alien, or progeny of an Egyptian cat god.
More likely the new teenager will be gay and learn how to accept themselves from their new gay moms.
That’s awesome!
Shows like Will & Grace and Grey’s Anatomy have been hard at work making gay people visible and teaching your mom that when two women are married there is no “husband” and when two men are married there is no “wife.” A show with warm, stable gay parents at the center (and not getting into epic plane crashes or car crashes that spawn musical numbers) is a pretty major step in combatting the kind of bile you see spring up every time the “g” word is mentioned.
Don’t believe me? Follow the link to Deadline where the news about J. Lo’s new show was broken and bask in the rampant bigotry on display in the comments.
According to AfterEllen the show is being fast tracked. So this time next year we may all be weeping over the very special episode where the cop mom saves the teen runaway from a drug deal gone wrong.
