  • Justified Creator Doing Downton Abbey On An Aircraft Carrier

    I really hope you read the headline, blinked, stared, and then had to fetch a coffee to ponder what the hell you’d just read.

    Now that you’re back and caffeinated let’s break it down.

    Justified showrunner Graham Yost and writer Taylor Elmore have a show they’re doing on Fox titled Wild Blue. It is a drama about being in the Navy and working on an aircraft carrier. Like Downton Abbey and Upstairs Downstairs it’s about also about the mighty stratification of society–only in this case it is exploring the enlisted men and women who keep an aircraft carrier running and the flashy pilots and officers who get all the credit rather than the servants and lords of a manor in England.

    And another place it’s different? One of the officers/ladies of the floating manor has been cast, and she isn’t white, and she is a bad ass pilot.

    Gina Rodriguez I look forward to watching you play a talented pilot who will inevitably fall for a swabby and jeopardize her career as an officer or something–only to be saved by Chief Petty Officer Patmore’s wisdom.

    Well I hate the military industrial complex with a fiery passion so I probably won’t watch this. I do like Yost’s work though. Justified is in my top shows of the moment.

      This is what I get for being such a Star Trek fan, because I’m not seeing it as the military industrial complex but as a spaceship with slightly fewer phasers and Klingons.

        Well I can’t detach that way when we’re currently dominating the globe with our violence. I also have to wonder when this gets co-opted by the Navy and turned into a recruitment ad.

          It probably already has been!

          There IS potential to explore some issues regarding the Navy on this thing, but I suspect it will instead feel like a merging of Downton Abbey and Top Gun which could be fun if you can stomach that jingoism.
