Xena: Warrior Princess was kind of a revolutionary show when it premiered back in 1995. It was about an unapologetic warlord who just happened to have breasts. Lucy Lawless, as Xena, quickly became an icon, and when the show was at it's height it was the most watched show on the planet.
What made the show work, besides Lucy Lawless running around in a leather skirt and Renee O'Connor running around in even less, was the blend of action, comedy and tragedy. This show was schizophrenic. Some episodes were full on farces, whereas others were tragedies that could easily send you into tears. Sometimes an episode would be both...at the SAME TIME. It made it a fun show to watch because you never knew what you'd get, but it could also make it a frustrating show, because again, you never knew what you were going to get.
The second and third season of the show remain, to this day, two of the most entertaining seasons of any show ever aired, and even the show's fifth season (generally considered its worst) has something to offer. It was the first time Fringe and Star Trek's Alex Kurtzman and Roberto Orci ever ran a television show. Other writers include Boardwalk Empire's Terence Winter and House MD's Liz Friedman. The show even had a rather odd first, Melissa Good was a popular Xena fan fiction writer who actually transitioned to story consultant and writer on the television show!
On the production side the show featured a number of crew members who would go on to be nominated for and even win Oscars for their work on The Lord of the Rings and popular/kickass stunt actress Zoë Bell had her first job working as--you guessed it--Xena.
A seminal show in the pantheon of awesomeness.
Xena Versus The Three Naked Gabrielles And Ares And Aphrodite
For about six months in 1997 I was obsessed with Xena. Not like its true fans of the day; I didn’t have posters or go to the internet to talk about it. I just recorded it and would come home on Monday afternoons and watch it. I would skip any episode that didn’t have Joxer [...]
